10year celebration

WOW Math!

We’re excited to share with you a detailed look into our latest WOW Math class, where students had a unique and engaging experience applying their Math skills in a practical setting.

Let’s shop with Math:

To reinforce the concepts of addition and subtraction, we created a mini shopping area. The students were thrilled to step into the roles of shoppers, selecting from a variety of items like snacks, toys, and garments and books. Each item had a price, and students were asked to shop for the things they liked from each store.

Here’s how the activity unfolded:

  • Making Shopping Lists:
Each student chose items they wanted to “buy”.
  • Calculating Totals:
After selecting their items, students added up the prices to determine their total. This reinforced their ability to add multiple numbers accurately.
  • Handling Money:
Students were then required to subtract the total cost from the amount they were asked to pay, to determine how much change they should receive. This step helped solidify their subtraction skills.
  • Checking Work:
To ensure accuracy, students double-checked their totals and the change they would receive, allowing them to apply and revise their understanding of both addition and subtraction in a real-world context.

Learning Outcome:

This hands-on approach not only made learning fun but also provided a meaningful way for students to connect Math to everyday life. The activity encouraged them to think critically, solve problems, and work with numbers in a practical scenario.

We’re proud of how well the students engaged with this activity and how it helped deepen their understanding of these key mathematical concepts.
